About Flamenco in Granada
Granada is one of the main references of flamenco in Spain, especially the area known as Sacromonte. This gipsy quarter is the heart of what flamenco experts called jondura or duende and the birthplace of the zambra, a flamenco dance and song party which began in the 16th century.
The true origins of Flamenco are a mystery because historically Andalucía has been such a fusion of cultures. Some experts think that flamenco could have come from monochord Islamic chants. Others attribute the creation of this genre to Jewish psalmodic melodies inspired in Byzantine chants. Yet, there are other specialists who believe that flamenco is quite similar to the old Hindu musical system, based on the fact that gypsies – nomadic people who came from India – scattered throughout Europe and introduced it in the Iberian Peninsula at the beginning of the 15th century.
However it happened, flamenco, known as “cante jondo” or “cante grande”, is the most representative expression of Andalusian folklore. Its popularity started to grow in the 18th century when some of the different styles were born from the copla. Some years later, flamenco was already a widely spread and famous art and Cafés Cantantes were created, establishments where singing was free, live concert. That was the first step in converting flamenco into a known and appreciated musical genre.
